A globe valve is comprised of two halves, separated by an opening with a moveable plug or disc that can be screwed in, or unscrewed to open and close. They're most commonly used to open, close, or throttle flow in a system.

Globe valves are beneficial for many applications where flow must be regulated and a constant flow of fluid is not necessarily required. Below are just a few common applications where you might find a globe valve:

Cooling water systems
Fuel oil systems
Feedwater or chemical feed systems
Boiler and main steam vents and drains
Turbine lube oil system and others

ADVANTAGES

Globe valves have both good throttling and shutoff capabilities
Easy to maintain and resurface the seats
Can be used as a stop-check valve if the disc is not attached to the stem

DISADVANTAGES

High pressure drop
Requires greater force or a larger actuator to seat the valve
If you’re experiencing issues with a globe valve, or need to select a new one for your process, talk to an engineer experienced in selection and sizing for these types of valves. Doing so will help your system perform at its highest efficiency, while requiring a lot less maintenance.
